Alberta okays MEG’s Surmont SAGD project

The Alberta government has approved the development plan for MEG Energy Corp.’s Surmont oil sands project 53 miles south of Fort McMurray.

The phased project is to have ultimate production capacity of about 120,000 b/d of bitumen from steam-assisted gravity drainage.

It is 30 miles north of MEG’s producing Christina Lake SAGD project.

When it applied for an Oil Sands Conservation Act application in 2014, the company said it envisioned 55 multi-well production pads and a central processing facility with three processing trains for steam generation, cogeneration, bitumen and water treatment, and sulphur recovery.
