BHP growing gas resource offshore Trinidad and Tobago

BHP expects to take an investment decision later this year on the Ruby gas project off Trinidad and Tobago, the company said in its latest results statement.

Recently BHP completed Phase 3 of its deep-water drilling campaign around the islands: the Bélé-1, Tuk-1, and Hi-Hat-1 exploratory wells in the Northern licences all encountered gas, confirming additional volumes around the Bongos discovery.

Technical work is under way to assess further exploration targets and commercial options for the Northern gas play.

Early last week the company spudded the deep-water Trion-3DEL appraisal well offshore Mexico, the main aims being to further delineate the scale and characterisation of the field.

In Australia, as part of the North West Shelf Joint Venture, BHP participated in the Achernar-1 exploration to fulfil a well commitment on the WA-28-P exploration permit. However, this was a dry hole.

The Bass Strait West Barracouta offshore project is tracking to plan.
