DEME upgrading jack-up vessel with Huisman crane

DEME Offshore has contracted Huisman to build a new crane for the DP-2 jack-up installation vessel Sea Installer.

crane’s lifting capacity is expected to increase from 900 metric tons (992 tons) to 1,600 metric tons (1,764 tons). The new crane will enable the Sea Installer to handle the next generation of offshore wind turbines.

The upgraded Sea Installer will be deployed for the first time at the 800-MW Vineyard Wind 1 project, 24 km (15 miles) offshore Martha’s Vineyard. The project will feature 62 GE Haliade-X offshore turbines which will have a 220-metre (722-foot) rotor, 107-metre (351-foot) blades, and be 248 metres (814 feet) high.

Vineyard Wind 1 will be the company’s first offshore wind project in the US.

The Sea installer is currently being deployed at the Hornsea Two offshore wind farm in the UK.

DEME also secured an option to upgrade the crane on the jack-up installation vessel Sea Challenger.
