Dutch platform chosen for hydrogen power plant

Neptune Energy will participate in a pilot project to create the first offshore hydrogen plant in the Dutch North Sea.

NexStep, the Dutch Association for Decommissioning and Re-Use, and TNO, the Dutch research organisation, commissioned the pilot.

A megawatt electrolyser, housed within a sea container, will be installed on Neptune’s Q13a platform, 13 kilometres (eight miles) offshore Scheveningen.

According to the company, this is the first fully electrified offshore oil platform in the Dutch sector, designed to save around 16,500 metric tons (18,188 tons) of carbon dioxide per year.

Hydrogen produced by the electrolyser will be transported from the platform through an existing pipeline to an offshore structure, where it will be used to generate electricity.

The pilot is due to start operating in 2020, and should provide a testing ground for other innovative technologies and integrated systems, Neptune said.
