Equinor finds oil in the Barents Sea

Equinor has proven more oil close to its Johan Castberg development in the Barents Sea.

The semi-submersible Transocean Enabler drilled well 7220/7-4 in production licence 532, 10 km (6.2 miles) south-west of well 7220/8-1 on the Johan Castberg field, in 351 m (1,151 ft) of water.

The well penetrated 109 m (357 ft) of oil in the Stø and Nordmela formations, and the top reservoir at a vertical depth of 1,788 m (5,866 ft), but did not encounter the anticipated gas cap.

Early analysis suggests a recoverable resource of 31-50 MMbbl.

Equinor and partners Vår Energi and Petoro will consider a future tie-in to the planned infrastructure for Johan Castberg.

This was the first of four wells Equinor expects to operate or participate in this year in the Barents Sea.

Transocean Enabler will now return to Castberg for development drilling.
