Heerema to install Sofia converter platform offshore the UK

Sembcorp Marine has contracted Heerema Marine Contractors to transport and install the HVDC converter platform at the Sofia offshore wind farm.

The company’s semi-submersible crane vessel Sleipnir is expected to install the platform in 2024.

RWE Renewables is developing the 1.4-GW Sofia offshore wind farm, 220 km (137 miles) off the coast of Redcar, Teesside, on the shallow central area known as Dogger Bank in the North Sea.

Sembcorp Marine, in consortium with GE Renewable Energy’s Grid Solutions, received an EPCI contract for the HVDC electrical system works for the project, which includes an onshore converter station and an offshore converter platform.

The project is expected to be completed by 4Q 2026 and provide power for about 1.2 million UK homes.
