Petrofac to support North Sea Acorn gas-hydrogen options

Petrofac’s Engineering and Production Services business will support Pale Blue Dot Energy on two projects in north-east Scotland involving carbon capture and storage (CCS) and conversion of North Sea gas to hydrogen.

The company’s full work scope comprises provision of project management systems and technical assistance during FEED for Acorn CCS, and concept select for Acorn Hydrogen, both part of new developments planned at the St Fergus gas terminal near Peterhead.

Acorn CCS holds the first UK CO₂ appraisal and storage licence awarded by the Oil and Gas Authority, and is looking to develop CO₂ mitigation infrastructure to help meet the Scottish and UK governments’ Net Zero targets.

With the Acorn Hydrogen project, natural gas from under the North Sea would be reformed into clean hydrogen, with CO₂ emissions safely mitigated through the Acorn CCS infrastructure.
