Premier uploads 3D seismic results to UK data repository

Britain’s National Data Repository (NDR) has introduced what it claims is a faster, easier and more cost-effective way of reporting seismic data.

According to the Oil and Gas Authority (OGA), this should assist the search for undiscovered hydrocarbons and potential offshore sites for carbon storage.

Premier Oil, by uploading data from its 2019 Tolmount 3D seismic survey in the UK southern North Sea, is the first oil company to use the new Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) method to report 3D seismic data to the OGA, which has immediately published it with support from Tolmount partner Dana Petroleum.

The OGA hopes this will lead to further downloads and re-use of up-to-date datasets by others. It points out that the SFTP service allows companies to fulfil their seismic reporting obligations online, without the need to spend time transcribing large data volumes to portable disks.

The NDR was launched in March 2019 and comprises over 130 terabytes of information including over 5,000 seismic surveys, with new data continually being added.

According to the OGA, around 350 ‘visitors’ check the repository each day, with users obtaining around 320 terabytes of disclosed content in the first year of operation.

The data is helping companies make better decisions in exploration and investment, the OGA added, with some of the information, dating back to the mid-1960s, available to help determine whether subsurface resources could be used for carbon storage.
