Qatar Petroleum Awards North Field Contract

On the 27th May Qatar Petroleum reported that it has awarded McDermott Middle East Inc the front end engineering design (FEED) contract for its North Field Expansion Project’s offshore pipelines and topsides facilities.

“The offshore topsides and pipelines are an important component of the North Field Expansion Project’s implementation,” Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatar Petroleum president and CEO and Qatar’s minister of state for energy affairs, said. “We are pleased to have McDermott take part in this important effort.”

Under the FEED contract, McDermott will provide engineering design services for eight unmanned wellhead platform topsides, four 38-inch trunk lines and four 28-inch intrafield lines, stated Qatar Petroleum.

The national oil company added that it should take 12 months for McDermott to complete the work within the FEED’s scope.

“This award comes on the heels of a series of announcements for other components of the project which are all important milestones towards delivering our strategy of increasing Qatar’s production capacity from 77 to 110 million tons per annum, which is progressing well and according to plan on all fronts,” Mr Al-Kaabi said.

LNG producer Qatargas is executing the North Field Expansion mega-project on Qatar Petroleum’s behalf. Discovered in 1971, the North Gas Field holds a total recoverable resource of more than 900 trillion standard cubic feet of gas and is considered the world’s largest single non-associated gas field, Qatar Petroleum states on its website.

Once it concludes in 2024, the North Field Expansion should translate into US$40 billion in new export revenue for Qatar, Bloomberg reported last September.
