Sleipnir completes sea trials

Heerema Marine Contractors said the Sleipnir, its newest semi-submersible crane vessel, has completed sea trials and crane load tests.

During the sea trials all major systems performed according to specifications or better, the company said.

When all eight thrusters were deployed, the vessel reached a speed of 12.2 knots, about 22.6 km/hr.

The vessel’s two 10,000-metric ton revolving cranes which can lift loads of up to 20,000 metric tons in tandem, were also put to the test.

Operational tests were carried out successfully with loads of 11,000 metric tons per crane (110% of its capacity).

The dynamic positioning system performed even better than the specifications, HMC said.

The system can keep the vessel stationary within the footprint of a garden tile of 30 x 30 cm during operational work.

The Sleipnir, which is said to be the world’s first LNG-powered construction vessel, will soon begin its maiden voyage to southern Spain where it will be prepared for its first installation project in the Mediterranean.
