UK association takes action to maintain offshore operations

Oil & Gas UK (OGUK) has convened a Pandemic Steering Group, comprised of representatives from across the industry.

Its remit is to identify and address the challenges of maintain offshore operations at present and ensuring communication with relevant stakeholders and government agencies.

The group, which is focused solely on issues which require cross-industry action and coordination, is meeting regularly and sharing updates with OGUK’s technical groups.

Member companies are said to be implementing their individual pandemic response and business continuity plans.

Due to the issued involved in managing any confirmed case of COVID-19 on an offshore installation, restrictions will be imposed on personnel traveling to offshore installations. They will not be allowed to do so if they have returned from or transited through affected countries in the last 14 days, or since dates defined on the UK government’s list of affected areas.

Restrictions also apply to staff who have been in close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19 in the past 14 days, or if they have experienced symptoms of cough, fever, or shortness of breath.

OGUK added that the travel restrictions apply to fixed and mobile offshore installations, but at present not to vessels involved in the UK’s offshore oil and gas industry.

Safety and environment director Trevor Stapleton said: “This sector is experienced in managing risks associated with complex safety and health matters, with robust processes and arrangements in place to ensure effective prevention measures and response for both onshore and offshore operations.

“The challenges of managing health in a remote environment are understood and industry has long-established medical facilities and personnel onboard, supported by a topsides doctor onshore.”
