Up to 10 wells for ultra-deep-water Myanmar gas tieback

Total/Woodside Energy’s block A-6 project in the Rakhine basin offshore Myanmar will be the country’s first ultra-deep-water development.

The block covers an area close to 10,000 square kilometres (3,861 square miles) in water depths of up to 2,300 metres (7,546 feet).

Woodside has a 40% interest in the joint venture and is the technical joint operator for exploration and appraisal operations.

MPRL E&P with 20% is also a joint operator. Total, which has a 40% interest, will assume operatorship during the development phase.

According to Woodside, the partners aim to start front-end engineering design during the second half of this year.

Since 2018 when the Shwe Yee Htun-2 discovery well delivered 40 metres (131 feet) of net gas pay, five more wells have been drilled, all encountering gas. Woodside estimates the combined resource at 67 MMboe.

The current development calls for around ten ultra-deep-water wells (six wells in Phase 1 and up to four more in Phase 2), in water depths of 2,000-2,300 metres (6,562-7,546 feet), connected via a subsea gathering system to a shallow water processing platform.

Production will be exported via a 240-kilometre (149-mile) export pipeline to a riser platform close to Total’s Yadana platform complex and from there to Myanmar and Thailand via existing pipeline infrastructure.
