88 Energy finds hydrocarbon zones on Alaskan North Slope

Interpretation of logging-while-drilling data has indicated multiple hydrocarbon-bearing zones in 88 Energy Ltd’s North Slope of Alaska wildcat, Merlin-1, the first well in the Perth-based company’s Project Peregrine acreage.

The Nanushuk formation – containing the primary targets – was encountered about 600 feet low to prognosis and is interpreted to be some 500 feet thicker than that encountered in wells drilled in Willow oil field north of the permit.

88 Energy said the gamma log indicates the presence of more sand packages than those in the Willow wells and that the Merlin-1 sand packages are generally cleaner in nature.

Oil shows were recorded over multiple intervals during drilling. Mud gas peaks were also recorded with heavier gas components, including C5, observed. Resistivity was elevated over these intervals.

Fluorescence was observed in the drilling mud along with a petroliferous odour over three of the target intervals, one of which is thought to be part of a potentially separate sand package that is also present in the company’s Harrier prospect.

88 Energy will now run a wireline logging programme during the coming week to determine reservoir quality and confirm whether mobile hydrocarbons are present in the Merlin well.
