JDR expands cable scope for Moray East offshore wind farm

Boskalis has contracted JDR to provide the termination and testing of 100 array cables and two offshore substation interconnector cables for the Moray East wind farm off Scotland.

 

This award secures further UK content for the project and comes in addition to the supply of the 200 km (124 miles) of 66kV array cable and a range of termination accessories, which are currently being manufactured by the company in its facility in Hartlepool.

 

The scope of work includes the provision of technicians, tooling, and test equipment. The company will perform procedures for the stripping of the armour protection, fitment of the permanent hang-offs, routing, cleating, electrical and fibre termination, including testing of the cables.

 

It will also carry out Damped AC testing of the substation interconnector cables.

 

The termination and testing works are due to start in November 2020 and continue until mid-2021.

 

With the contracting of JDR for both the cable supply and the termination and testing works Boskalis will benefit from the continuity from production to installation, ensuring the integrity of the cables through final commissioning until energisation.

 

The reduction in interfaces will also ensure a slicker operation and clearer scope demarcation, the company claimed.

 

Located 22 km (14 miles) off the coast of Scotland in the Moray Firth, Moray East, is a 950-MW offshore windfarm which covers an area of 520 sq km (201 square miles) in water depths ranging from 37 m to 57 m (121 ft to 187 ft).

 

The project is being developed by Moray Offshore Windfarm (East) Ltd, a consortium of EDP Renewables, Diamond Generating Europe, and Engie.

 

This consortium contracted Boskalis for the supply and installation of the wind farm’s inter-array cables.

 

Neil Brown, Head of Services at JDR, said this is the first time the company will provide termination and testing for Boskalis.
