Norwegian majors consider blue ammonia conversion for Barents Sea gas

Vår Energi, Equinor, and Horisont Energi are investigating the potential for producing blue ammonia from Barents Sea gas fields, along with CO2 capture.

Vår operates the Goliat and Alke licences: Goliat is mainly an oil field, with the gas at present reinjected into the reservoir. The company estimates the total recoverable gas resource in Alke and Goliat at around 25 bcm.

The company has been investigating various alternatives for producing the gas from these licences, with an ammonia plant included in studies over the past year. Vår’s longer-term goal is a gas evacuation solution for the region.

Horisont Energi’s Barents Blue Project may involve bringing Alke and Goliat gas resources via a subsea pipeline to Hammerfest, northern Norway, for conversion into carbon-neutral blue ammonia, capturing and depositing CO2 in reservoirs beneath the Barents Sea.

Vår will contribute its experience with the Barents Sea subsurface based on years of production from Goliat.

The three partners aim to develop a technical and commercial solution, serving as the basis for further studies and a potential investment decision.

Carbon neutral ammonia, Vår added, could in future be used as an energy source by the maritime transportation sector.
