SASOL partners Danish firm to obtain gas-to-liquids production licence in South Africa

The South African energy company Sasol has just entered into a partnership with its Danish counterpart Haldor Topsoe, with a view to obtaining a gas-to-liquids technology licence (GTL) in South Africa.

The association aims to produce diesel, kerosene and naphtha from natural gas.

The agreement between the two parties also covers the emerging field of liquid hydrogen.

Under the terms of the agreement, the oil engineer TechnipFMC will be in charge of the provision of technical assistance and construction services.

Both parties agreed to propose to the South African authorities Topsoe’s hydrotreating technologies. This will give potential customers access to a single offering that covers the entire value chain, from gas to liquid fuel.

It must be said that GTL technology is presented as a solution for countries with significant gas resources but limited access to crude oil or liquid fuels. It is a technology born in the 20th century, is mostly found in parts of Central Asia and, historically, in countries with geopolitical constraints or embargoes.

As a reminder, Sasol and Haldor Topsoe are already cooperating on GTL projects in Qatar and Uzbekistan.

Sasol participated in Chevron’s Escravos GTL project in Nigeria.
