Turkey’s Tuna-1 discovery could be transformational

The gas discovery of the scale of Turkey’s Tuna-1 find in the Black Sea, if developed, would be transformational for the country, given its overwhelming reliance on imports and crippling energy import bill, according to Wood Mackenzie.

Turkey announced a significant gas discovery last week. Initially, the news was shared by Reuters.

Then on the 21st August, Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made an announcement himself and shared it on social media.

The Tuna-1 (or Danube-1 in English) gas resources, according to Mr Erdoğan stand at 320 billion cubic metres. Reuters claimed in its article that the gas made in the Tuna-1 well was expected to be around 26 trillion cubic feet or 800 billion cubic metres.

Mr Erdoğan said on Twitter: “Our Fatih drillship discovered 320 billion cubic metres of natural gas reserves, thanks to the drilling in the Danube-1 [Tuna-1] well, which started on the 20th July.

There is no stopping and resting for us until we become a net exporter in energy. #GoodLuck
