Van Oord to install cables at wind farms offshore Taiwan

Ørsted has contracted Van Oord for the cable installation works at the Greater Changhua 1 and 2a wind farms offshore Taiwan.

 

Located between 35 and 60 km (22 and 37 miles) off the west coast of Changhua County, the 900-MW Greater Changhua 1 and 2a offshore wind farms are expected to supply energy to about one million households per year.

 

Van Oord is responsible for the transportation, installation, and burial of the 111 inter array cables, with a total length of about 135 km (83 miles), and the three export cables, with a total length of about 145 km (90.1 miles)

The company will use its cable-laying vessel Nexus, equipped with a cable carousel with a capacity of 5,000 metric tons (5,512 tons). The company’s trencher Dig-It will bury the cables to the required depth.

 

The installation work is expected to start in 2021.

 

This will be Van Oord’s first cable project in Taiwan.

 

Once operational in 2022, the wind farms will contribute to the Taiwanese government’s target of 5.7 GW offshore wind by 2025.
