Heerema considers Dutch shore power connection for offshore fleet

Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC), Eneco, and the Port of Rotterdam Authority have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to investigate the potential for shore power infrastructure in the Calandkanaal on the western Netherlands coast.

This could provide Heerema’s construction vessel fleet with sustainable power inshore.

The parties have formed a consortium to explore the opportunities and are looking for marine partners to help speed the process.

They plan a feasibility study on a 20-MVA a shore power connection. This would allow large offshore vessels moored at the Calandkanaal to be fully powered by green electricity while operating inshore.

Use of shore power for moored vessels on this scale would be a world first for the industry, HMC said, and would also reduce the fleet’s emissions and noise output.

Due to the fact that the diesel generators would be switched off shortly after a vessel is moored, nearly all emissions – CO₂, NOX, SOX, and PM would be eliminated in the channel.
