Jotun coatings to protect Odfjell rig offshore South Africa

Jotun is supplying 19,000 square metres (670,979 square feet) of anti-fouling coatings to protect Odfjell Drilling’s dual-derrick semi-submersible Deepsea Stavanger ahead of an exploration campaign for Total offshore South Africa.

To help optimise operations and durability above and below the water line, Jotun is currently applying the anti-fouling SeaQuantum Ultra S and topcoat Hardtop One, a polixiloxane coating, at the Semco Maritime yard near Bergen.

Conditions at the ultra-harsh environment offshore location could lead to heavy fouling on the rig’s hull, increasing frictional drag. This, combined to the force of the currents against the rig walls, makes it harder to maintain the correct position, Jotun said, creating a demand for greater thruster power.

Lasse Isaksen, global concept director, said the company assessed the likely fouling intensity, and applied metocean data to determine the optimum coating.

SeaQuantum Ultra S’ fast polishing silyl acrylate composition, he added, would ensure a clean hull and optimal manoeuvrability and performance. The topsides will be coated with Hardtop One.
