Mitsubishi Power Secures 3-Year Agreement to Maintain Boilers Crucial for Reliable Energy Access in Mindanao

On the 3rd August Mitsubishi Power (Philippines) Inc announced a three-year long-term service agreement (LTSA) for boiler ultrasonic thickness gauging mapping inspection activities at Therma South, Inc (TSI) – a 300-MW (2×150) Circulating Fluidised Bed (CFB) coal-fired plant at Barangay Binugao, Toril, Davao City.

The team’s technical expertise in CFB boiler risk-based maintenance work will enhance the reliability of the power plant’s two boiler units, contributing to the provision of stable and efficient power for the Mindanao region.

Risk-based maintenance prioritises equipment which carry the highest risk should they fail, for better management efficiency in the power plant.

LTSA takes effect from March 2021 until July 2024, and inspections will be carried out by MHI Power (Philippines) Plant Services Corporation, an affiliate company of Mitsubishi Power.

This project is the latest of more than 90 risk-based maintenance projects amounting to 3.6 GW in capacity which the company has worked on since 2008.

Abe Nisnisan, Facility Head of TSI, welcomed the partnership, “Therma South is a critical supplier of baseload power to the Mindanao region, and as such it is important that our operations run reliably and sustainably. We constantly look at ways to make improvements to deliver strong maintenance results across a range of solutions. We look forward to our partnership with Mitsubishi Power to ensure the continued improvement of reliability and efficiency of our equipment.”

Vincent Engracia, President, MHI Power (Philippines) Plant Services Corporation, spoke of the company’s commitment to the region, “Reliable and efficient power is the foundation of stable economic and societal growth. Mindanao had faced frequent power shortages before the completion of Therma South and so being able to help play a role in supporting this community is a very proud moment for us.

“Our equipment and services supply more than a quarter of the Philippines’ installed capacity, and this partnership is another example of how our total plant solutions are helping

Therma South Inc is a wholly owned subsidiary of AboitizPower and supplements power generation required to meet the region’s baseload requirements to reduce the frequency and duration of power shortages in Mindanao, due to hydropower intermittency.

TSI is certified in four ISO standards, namely Quality Management (ISO 9001:2015), Environmental Management (ISO 14001:2015), Occupational Health and Safety Management (ISO 45001:2018), and Asset Management System (ISO 55001:2014).

Along with Therma Luzon, Inc and Therma Visayas, Inc, the three primarily compose the Coal Business Unit of AboitizPower.
