New York selects two Equinor offshore wind projects

In the state’s second solicitation, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has provisionally awarded two offshore wind projects, totalling 2,490 MW.

Under the award, Equinor and incoming strategic partner BP will provide 1,260 MW of renewable offshore wind power from Empire Wind 2, and another 1,230 MW of power from Beacon Wind 1.

The execution of the procurement award is subject to the successful negotiation of a purchase and sale agreement with NYSERDA.

Empire Wind is located 15-30 miles (24-48 km) south-east of Long Island and spans 80,000 acres (125 square miles), with water depths between 65 and 131 ft (20 and 40 m). The lease was acquired in 2017 and is being developed in two phases (Empire Wind 1 and 2) with a total installed capacity of more than 2 GW (816 + 1,260 MW).

Beacon Wind is located more than 60 miles (97 km) east of Montauk Point and 20 miles (32 km) south of Nantucket and covers 128,000 acres (200 square miles). The lease was acquired in 2019 and has the potential to be developed with a total capacity of more than 2.4 GW.

According to Equinor, this is one of the largest renewable energy procurements in the US to date.

As part of the award by NYSERDA, the companies will partner with the state to transform the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal and the Port of Albany into large-scale offshore wind working industrial facilities.
