Svanen to install Kriegers Flak foundations in the Baltic Sea

Van Oord’s heavy lift vessel Svanen has arrived at the Kriegers Flak offshore wind farm in the Danish sector of the Baltic Sea.

Van Oord entered into an agreement with Vattenfall for the transport and installation of the foundations for the Kriegers Flak wind farm.

The company will install the 72 monopiles and transition pieces.

Up to 800 metric tons (882 tons) of monopiles of will be transported floating from Rostock, Germany, directly to the offshore site, 15 to 40 km (9.3 to 25 miles) from the Danish coast.

The transition pieces will be transported on barges from Aalborg, Denmark. A noise mitigation system will be used to reduce the underwater noise resulting from offshore pile driving, the company said.

In April, Van Oord’s subsea rock installation vessel Bravenes started the installation of the seabed protection.

With a production capacity of just over 600 MW, Kriegers Flak is expected to be Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm and is scheduled to be fully operational in 2021.
